Inspired by luxury yachts, this new small ship features some mega-ship amenities like an infinity pool and a full-service spa and fitness center. The ship embarks on all-inclusive journeys to far-flung destinations in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, India, the Indian Ocean, and Africa. With nine dining options and a champagne toast to every adventure, Explora II promises a luxurious home at sea. This fledgling cruise line, an off-shoot of MSC, is about to launch their second small luxury ship. Passengers aboard Explora II will be immersed in elegant design with 461 ocean-front suites offering private terraces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and butler services.

In addition to the traditional buffet, there is a family-focused buffet in the Surfside neighborhood, together with several grab-and-go outlets throughout the ship. Despite the focus on families, there are plenty of spaces for adults to escape. Icon of the Sea's Central Park, an open-air green space, is designed to offer adult guests a serene setting, perfect for romantic dinners or tranquil strolls amidst the plants and trees. 'Icon of the Seas' will be the biggest cruise ship at sea when it sets sail in January 2024. Like Disney Wish, Disney Treasure is part of Disney's new Triton Class of vessels, and it'll share many of the same features and layout as its older sister. Disney has announced quite a few major changes for Disney Treasure, including the addition of an all-new Mexican restaurant called Plaza de Coco that is themed around the events of the "Coco" movie.

Entertainment & Onboard Activities

Clocking in at 250,380 gross tons and measuring nearly a quarter mile long (1,198 feet to be exact), the vast ship will sport a total of 20 decks, 18 of which will be accessible to guests. The biggest thing to ever hit cruising is coming in January 2024, when Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas—which will be the largest cruise ship in the world—will debut to passengers for the first time. Joining the Viking fleet in December, the Vela offers a more intimate experience with just 998 passengers. Amenities like heated bathroom floors and full-size verandas in staterooms add comfort. At the same time, the ship’s smaller size allows access to ports that are inaccessible to more giant liners.

In June 2023, the ship hit a major milestone when it completed its first sea trials outside the shipyard in Turku, Finland. Next up is the colossal new ship’s first voyage, slated to depart on January 27, 2024. It will sail roundtrip from Miami to the Caribbean islands of St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and the Bahamas.

Each of these new ships promises a unique and diverse cruising experience as the luxury cruise industry continues to evolve, and mainstream cruise ships add more bells and whistles. Accommodations Fit for RoyaltyFrom cozy interior staterooms to expansive suites, Sun Princess caters to every cruiser’s needs. Indulge in the ship’s new Signature Collection accommodations, offering premium services, upgraded amenities, and exclusive access to a suite lounge and restaurant. Opt for luxurious staterooms overlooking the Piazza for spectacular, ever-changing views.

After seeing its delivery postponed in 2023, the Brilliant Lady should enter service for Virgin Voyages in the second quarter of 2024. However, details about the vessel’s new inaugural season have yet to be announced by the company. Silversea is celebrating its 30th anniversary and introducing the second ship in its Nova class, Silver Ray.

A newstay-all-day neighborhood just for families

Built to an all-new design for the 183-year-old brand, the 3,000-passenger Queen Anne will be Cunard's first new vessel in 14 years — an unusually long period for any line to go without a new ship. Note that Icon of the Seas is just the first of three sister ships Royal Caribbean has on order for delivery by 2026, all of similar dimensions. In addition, Icon of the Seas will have a record-for-a-ship seven pools, four of which will be at a main pool area called Chill Island.

Sun Princess may not be slated to debut as the biggest cruise ship in the world, or even close to it, but this ship is still significant for Princes Cruises fans. The ship will be the largest ship in the cruise line’s fleet, more than 20% larger than the line’s second-largest ship. A colorful addition to the top decks is Thrill Island, an epicenter for exhilarating activities. It will include classic Royal Caribbean attractions like the FlowRider surf simulator, mini-golf and rock climbing, together with what the line claims will be the largest water park at sea. When comparing it to the Wonder of the Seas, which is the current record holder for the world's largest cruise ship, Icon surpasses it in size and passenger capacity.

Until recently, the line had resisted the trend among major brands to build even bigger vessels that offer a supersized megaresort-at-sea experience. Like Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee measures 183,521 tons, putting it in a tie with the former ship for the position of biggest vessel ever to sail for Carnival (at 181,808 tons, sister ship Mardi Gras is slightly smaller). Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras, notably, are a whopping 35% bigger than the next-biggest Carnival ships currently afloat, and they are bigger than all but a dozen other cruise vessels in the world.

Under construction at the Chesapeake shipyard in Maryland, the 109-guest ship will spend its inaugural season offering American Cruise Line’s Florida Gulf Coast & Keys Cruise. Though Celebrity’s latest addition, Celebrity Ascent, began cruising the Eastern Caribbean in December 2023, it’s close enough to include in this 2024 list of new cruise ships. It features Edge Class’s unique Infinite Balcony with its indoor/outdoor sliding window. Other new features include a new Asian and sushi restaurant, and a new smoke-free casino with an attached dance club.

Set out on the epic island-hopping vacation you’ve been waiting for onboard the best cruises for 2024, 2025, and 2026. And make every moment count at our private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, with record-breaking thrills and endless ways to chill — for families and couples alike. Following the Explora I, the Explora II is set to become Explora Journey’s second ultra-luxury ship.

Also, a new Haunted Mansion-themed bar will replace the "Star Wars-" themed Hyperspace Lounge on Disney Wish. As is typical for Viking, the fare will include a shore excursion at every port that Vela visits. Also included will be Wi-Fi, and wine and beer with lunch and dinner — all part of Viking's "no-nickel-and-diming" philosophy. The world's newest cruise line, three-month-old Explora Journeys, is doubling in size in 2024 with the addition of Explora 2. As with earlier Royal Caribbean ships, it'll even have an indoor ice-skating rink. Silver Ray's asymmetrical design will also be evident at two food and beverage venues at the top of the vessel — both new-for-Silversea concepts that first debuted in August on Silver Nova.

But enough gushing — what can you expect from this year’s batch of new cruise ships? Among the most notable of these smaller vessels is the 60-passenger AmaMagdalena, which is being billed as the first major river ship designed to sail on the Magdalena River in Colombia. Avalon's new entry for 2024, the 102-passenger Avalon Alegria, will be that line's first vessel on the Douro River in Portugal. Wellness-focused areas will include a new-for-the-line, glass-enclosed Wellness Studio at the top of the ship that will offer classes in yoga, pilates, Zumba and line dancing during the day and ballroom dancing classes at sunset. Queen Anne, notably, will embrace the latest trends of travel and cruising in a way that Cunard ships haven't done before, including a new focus on choice in dining and entertainment, wellness and onboard celebrations.

That's just a tad below the 7,600 passengers that will be able to fit aboard Royal Caribbean's soon-to-debut Icon of the Seas — the new world's largest cruise ship (more on that vessel below). A sister ship to Disney Wish, the 4,000-passenger Disney Treasure puts Aladdin in the spotlight, along with a theme of adventure. Princess Cruises is also debuting something completely different in the 4,000-passenger Sun Princess, the first of the line's Sphere-class ships, slated for February 2024. Families in particular should look forward to a slew of new features for young ones and teens in an area called Park19.
